Israel forcibly demolish UN agency headquarters

2026-08-27

August 26-Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu issued a statement on the 25th, announcing that the "withdrawal operation" has begun against a subsidiary agency of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

This is a photo taken on August 25 in the village of Al-Kakab in East Jerusalem, showing that a vocational training center under the United Nations Near-North Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) was ordered to be demolished.

The statement said that Israel "will never allow any organization whose employees are involved in terrorism and the massacre of October 7, 2023 to operate in Israel" and will take all means to take action against it.

The organization that was ordered to be dismantled was a vocational training center run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East in the village of Al-Kqab in East Jerusalem, the Times of Israel reported. Israel's Minister of National Security Ben-Gerwell said earlier that Israeli police were working to "expel the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from the area". The Jerusalem government has approved plans to build roads and an "educational complex" on the training center's land.

UN Secretary-General Guterres spokesman Dijaric said that Guterres was deeply shocked by this development and condemned the actions of the Israeli authorities in the strongest possible terms.

Earlier this year, Israel demolished the office of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in East Jerusalem, triggering strong international condemnation.

UNRWA was established in 1949 to provide humanitarian assistance, education and medical care to registered Palestinian refugees living in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. In October 2024, the Knesset passed a bill prohibiting UNRWA from operating in Israel, which will come into force in early 2025.

In addition, on 25 August, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights criticized Israel for threatening to expel Gaza residents. Office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said the Israeli threat called it "outrageous," citing children flying kites as an example.

On August 23, Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Katz threatened that if they did not immediately stop flying kites, drones or balloons to Israel in Gaza, the Israeli military would step up its attacks on relevant personnel and "evacuate" residents of the affected areas.

According to Israeli media reports, about 10 kites recently flew into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, and the Israeli military shot down a kite on the 23rd. These kites do not carry explosives or flammable materials. The Israeli military believes the kites were Hamas's response to test Israel.
